For about a week now I’ve been impatiently waiting for the developers of Zoo to get things fixed up so I could check it out. I have a big thing about zoos; I just love them. Even though part of my soul dies whenever I see an elephant in a pen or a jungle cat in a cage, I still love zoos. I don’t know what to tell you.

So I was delighted to see an application called Zoo. Maybe this virtual zoo will satisfy my zoo craving, I thought! And today it is up and running again, so I’ve been checking it out.

The zoo is similar to (fluff)Friends, in that you can pet and feed your animals every day. However, fluffs just get grumpy when ignored, whereas zoo animals actually run away. And then you have to buy more. (You make money by visiting your friends’ zoos, where you can find hidden coins lying around. I am curious about the mindset required to come up with this. Do the developers routinely root around in their friends’ couch cushions to pay rent?)

There are several cute animal options (some of them are dinosaurs!) but I recommend the hippo. Because at this point in development, only the hippo can be mated with your friends to produce weird, hybrid frippo babies.

I love this idea. Unfortunately I can’t see how it will work yet, as there are still a lot of bugs to be worked out. I tried mating my hippo, but without giving me an option to choose a friend, I got a message saying my hippo had been mated. Now he has a big question mark for a face, although this is just surreal enough that I’m still enjoying it. Also, mating him bounced my money count from the 100 coins you start with up to 990. I’m not sure why.

There’s also an intriguing game called “Zoo Checkers” that’s still in beta form and wouldn’t load for me, but I’m looking forward to seeing how that looks in its final incarnation.

I’m hoping some non-buggy aspects also get improved, like animal tricks. Right now, when I tell my hippo to do a trick, he kind of rotates 90 degrees a few times and then stops. He’s a hippo, so I don’t know what kind of a trick I can reasonably expect, but maybe we could do some kind of fountaining splash with water or something.

I think Zoo is eventually going to be a great app, but it’s not there yet. I’ll keep checking on it to see how things progress, so stay tuned.
