The New York Times is running an article about Stephen Colbert’s presidential explosion on Facebook called “The Colbert Nation Quickly Colonizes Facebook.”
Some background: Colbert jokingly announced his intention to run for president on his show, The Colbert Report, on October 16. Since then, more than a million people have joined the Facebook group “1,000,000 strong for Stephen Colbert.”
According to the NY Times article, the group’s membership grew so large so fast that it put a serious strain on Facebook’s servers and had to be taken offline for a little while until the problem was fixed.
According to Brian Stelter, who wrote the Times article, “It stretches the imagination to believe that every member of the Colbert group actually backs the television host as a political candidate.” Personally, I have no trouble imagining that more than a million people would rather vote for Colbert, who memorably removed the kid gloves and ripped into the Bush administration and the media at the 2006 White House Press Corps dinner, than for any of the candidates who are carefully side-stepping the tough questions and trying not to offend any of the six people who still vote in this country. But then, my imagination is pretty good. We’ll just have to wait and watch the write-in results this year. Maybe Colbert can be the new Nader, except with a better shot at winning.
The question that’s really baking my noodle is this: would Colbert have 1,000,000 supporters without the Facebook group? Stephen Colbert might owe a whole lot to Raj Vachhani, the high school kid who started the group in the first place.
